Evaluation History HL SL.

Answer all questions and statements honestly!

Average week, how many hours do you study history (the lessons are not included)?

□ 0 – 1 (12)

□ 2 – 5 (1)

□ 5 -

History is all about revision and recapping the details as well as the big questions. Necessary change is that you spend at least 3 hours a week from now on, studying on your own.

After lesson do you rehearse what we have done and make sure you have understood the lesson?

□ Never / very rarely (9)

□ Sometimes (it happens) (2)

□ Often (on a regular basis) (2)

See above!

After lesson do you ask questions to the text, meaning you read the chapter in the book / other sources?

□ Never / very rarely (9)

□ Sometimes (it happens) (2)

□ Often (on a regular basis) (2)

See above!

During lesson, do you ask questions to the teacher?

□ Never / very rarely (2)

□ Sometimes (it happens) (6)

□ Often (on a regular basis) (5)

Looks OK, the 2 that never asks questions should start doing so.

During lesson how focused are you on what is going on at the whiteboard?

□ Never / very rarely

□ Sometimes (it happens) (3)

□ Often (on a regular basis) (10)

All should always pay attention.

You are absent from class how often?

□ Never / very rarely (9)

□ Sometimes (it happens) (4)

□ Often (on a regular basis)

All lot of you have absent right now, shape up!

You come late how often?

□ Never / very rarely  (5)

□ Sometimes (it happens) (8)

□ Often (on a regular basis)

Well, that’s not my opinion. Usually when we start 5 of you are on time, the rest drops in within the first 5 minutes….. This is really annoying, and unnecessary!

What do you do to contribute to your own knowledge of history (list three things you actively do to make your knowledge better in History):

q       Summarize documents in my own words.

q       Watch documentaries.

q       Take notes

q       Revision?

q       Read the chapter we study, sometimes

q       Study ahead for the next part

q       Search the web

q       Ask dad.

q       Watch historical movies.

q       Relate what we study with current events.

All this looks good.

How do you check your own knowledge? (list three things you actively and often do)

q       I use a text from a revision course.

q       Memory cards, year and persons

q       Summarize books in notes

q       Make up and answer questions

q       Look over questions in the book

q       Make chronologies

q       Think on the bus

q       Reread the notes and see how much I remember.

q       Exams

q       Do the worksheets we get

q       Check with classmates

Some of this actually belongs in the other cathegory. It is very important that you when you rehearse asks yourself questions on what you are currently studying. A good idea is to study with a friend, ask each other. When you have checked you should leave the parts you knew and look up what you didn’t. Learn that and then go back and see if you still remember what you knew before.

It is important that you rehearse in the right way, in small portions, then do something completely different and after a while ( a few days perhaps) redo the questions and see if you still remember it.

How often have you checked old material on www.adjunkten.com?

□ Never / very rarely (8)

□ Sometimes (it happens) (5)

□ Often (on a regular basis)

I think that you are missing a very good service here, you have easy access to all the material and a majority of you never use it.. I add everything that we work with here, you can very easily go back and see what we were working with last april etc.

You should anchor up in what we did last semester, it will help you tremendously in your exams.

Use the webpage, it’s free and beautiful!

I have control on what IBO requires me to know for the different Papers.

□ I have no idea (6)

□ Fair enough (7)

□ Full control

At least six of you were honest. NONE had the right answers to the next to questions! Still you know that IBO is going to exam you, they decide what you should know and what we should cover.

I am honestly chocked to see that you are six months from exam and have no idea what areas are included in the two major papers. I would have been a bit more forgiven if it was Paper 3, since it is mixed up in everything else, but these two papers and what they are about, that something you should know in your sleep by now.

If you have no control over this you are very likely to study in the wrong way! And pick the wrong questions on your exam!

For Paper 2 we are studying these topics:

  1. Rise and Rule of Single Party States! (Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Mao and Castro)
  2. Cold War from 1945 to 1995!
  3. to a much lesser extent Causes and effects of War.

Paper 1 consists of these following prescribed subjects:

  1. Stalin 1924 – 1941.
  2. China 1946 – 1964
  3. Cold war 1960 – 1979.

Below I have a list of important things a teacher or you as student could do. Who do you think should have the responsibility for these things? Mark T for teacher, S for Student. Mark the three most important ones that the teacher should do!

q       Give you all the facts and details on each area: (4)

q       Check how much knowledge you have (1)

q       Point out the historical problems in each topic (3)

q       Give you documents to study (2)

q       Come up with fun ways of learning (2)

q       Solve problems you have come across studying on your own: (1)

q       Give you an overview on the area  (5)

q       Prepare for the exam, meaning handing out IB-questions and give you essay-questions: (9)

When it comes to who should what your answers look like this:

9 of had clear majority of T:s on the different things. 4 of you had 50/50. None of you had a majority of S:s.

My opinion is this; my job is that of a coach, I should train you and face you with possible difficulties on the way. This means that I should show you possible problems, I should also give you an overview of the area so you know what to expect. In order to do this I should present documents that are necessary for you to be able to see the problems and get the overview.

The rest is up to you. You are still to dependent on me, I am not going to be there in may, you are, I am not going to do the exam, you are. It is up to you to have control over your studies. You have to be more active when it comes to your studies.

Agree or disagree with the following statements:

If the teacher is bad I will do bad

□ I disagree (6)

□ I agree (5)

□ I don’t know (2)

Run Willy! Run! Even if I suck and you hate my guts and think that I am the biggest idiot you have ever come across, you are still going to be alone in May.

If the teacher doesn’t know an area I will never be able to learn

□ I disagree (9)

□ I agree (3)

□ I don’t know (1)

If I am unfocused I won’t see the structure

□ I disagree

□ I agree (12)

□ I don’t know (1)

I must be focused on my studies otherwise it will never work out.

□ I disagree

□ I agree (12)

□ I don’t know (1)

The most important is that I have a goal with my History studies.

□ I disagree (1)

□ I agree(10)

□ I don’t know (2)

State your goals with IB History here, why do you study History, what do you wish to get out of it?

A mixure from passing IB to genuine interest in history.

Your opinion about the lessons this semester:

I think that the structure in the lessons has been:

□ Bad

□ OK (8)

□ Good. (5)

The Cold War is difficult to get a clear structure in. But OK is OK, none said bad and that is a pleasant surprise.

The amount of lectures has been:

□ To few (2)

□ OK (11)

□ to many

I have tried to vary a bit between sources and lecture, to many sources some write.

I get the impression that Christian’s own knowledge on the areas we have covered is:

□ Bad

□ OK (1)

□ Good. (12)

Your own knowledge on the Cold War today is:

□ Bad (1)

□ OK (6)

□ Good. (6)

I think that the tempo/speed on the course is:

□ to slow

□ OK (13)

□ to fast

Other Comments you want me to have:

q       Fewer lessons just reading documents

q       You have improved a lot, now I don’t only like history now I feel I actually know it and remember it.

q       More essay writing exercises.

q       Maybe you shouldn’t expect a mental level of a 11 year old from us.

q       Talk more about the actual exams. Practice IB skills.

q       More fun lectures and worksheets.

These are a few of your comments. Many of you wished for Essay and exam practice.

That’s what we have revision for is my short answer to that. I know that you want to take the shortcut to your exam, you think that if you only practice the skill the rest will follow, but unfortunately that’s not true. In order to be able to answer most questions you have to have the knowledge first, then you can write essays and make the analysis that is required.

Ones we get to revision you will be able to answer comparing and analytical questions on Mao and Stalin in relation with the Cold War, but not before that.

We will do mock exam in February, and we have already done four essay exercises, that’s a lot compared to what others do.

I know that you will develop the proper skill ones you got all the facts straight, but before that it is pointless to have to many essays and exams. What are planning to write about?

I do talk exams with, all the time, in every lesson, in every document you get, in every worksheet and questionnaire you get. The entire course and the aim of everything is focused on the exam. The questions I raise in my lectures are in their essence of course related to the IB exam, why would I otherwise waste your time with it?
