Cold War
Marshall plan and Truman doctrine.
As we could
see, the Cold War slowly but firmly started during 1946. We had two major
events, the Long Telegram and the Fulton Speech that contributed to the start
of the Cold War.
Today you
will be given the opportunity to have a look at three significant sources;
- President Truman’s speech to
the Congress, introducing the Truman Doctrine.
- The Soviet Deputy Foreign
Minister Vyshinsky’s response in the UN.
- An Article from Pravda July 24
1948 on the development of American foreign policies.
Read these
articles and make notes so you can participate in the discussion.
What to
discuss?
- What purposes did Truman have
to launch the Truman Doctrine? Was it unnessecary and provocative? Was a
smart preventive action?
- How did the Russians respond?
- Do you think that was the
intention of Truman?
- Why do you think the Marshall
Plan upset the Russians so much?
- Would you agree that the Cold
War has started by September 1947?
- Would you say that the Cold War
started with the Truman Doctrine?
- What is the article in Pravda
referring to?
